xfinity tv 650x432 Comcast Releases XFINITY TV Player on Android, Watch Thousands of ON Demand Shows From Anywhere

Over the last year or so, Comcast released a couple of XFINITY apps that were nothing more than glorified TV guides or DVR managers. The one feature that would have actually made them useful on a regular basis, ON Demand streaming, was left out. That is until today. Comcast pushed the XFINITY TV Player app to the Play store, giving customers access to all of their favorite shows from anywhere in the world. It works over WiFi or a data connection, and does it flawlessly. I fired up the app for a few minutes and was watching old Eastbound & Down videos within seconds. Thanks, Comcast.

AT&T HTC One X bootloader unlocked with simple hex code modification

Officially, the AT&T HTC One X bootloader can't be unlocked due to certain restrictions, but that has not stopped the development community from devising a solution of their own. XDA member grankin01 has released a simple solution which allows the bootloader on the AT&T HTC One X to be unlocked by spoofing one of the phone's internal identification codes which makes the phone and HTC's bootloader unlock tool think that it is a Rogers HTC One XL.

The twelve step process is fairly simple, but you will need a hex editor, a little ADB knowledge and a rooted HTC One X. After the code changes are made on the AT&T HTC One X, you will then be able to use HTC's bootloader unlock tool found on htcdev.com.

Now that the bootloader on the AT&T One X can be unlocked, it's only a matter of time before the HTC One X development community releases countless tweaks and custom ROMs for the phone. Do any of you plan to unlock the bootloader on the AT&T HTC One X and make some tweaks to your phone or will you stick to the stock HTC Sense 4.0 experience for a little longer?

The POGO landscape dock for the Galaxy Nexus is back in stock at Samsung's official store, for those interested in dropping a cool $90 for a nightstand mate. We reviewed this dock back in February when it first surfaced, so if you are in the market for a stand, we suggest you check it out. I will warn you that $90 is about $60 above what this dock is probably worth. It charges your phone using the 3-pin connector and that's about it.

Samsung Galaxy SIII in Pebble Blue Delayed?

sgs3 blue8 650x365 Samsung Galaxy SIII in Pebble Blue Delayed?

According to a handful of reports, the Pebble Blue version (pictured above) of the Samsung Galaxy SIII has been delayed due to manufacturing issues. Samsung has apparently run into either quality or production problems and may have had to adjust the product, causing them to be behind as launch day quickly approaches. With the launch of the device happening in a variety of countries next week, the white model is likely to be the only one available until Samsung can catch up on production.

This is indeed unfortunate as the Pebble Blue version of this phone is by far the more appealing of the two (at least in our opinions). Its fake brushed metal look is quite beautiful as compared to the white, which we have seen time and time again on other Samsung products.

We took the blue model for a spin back at CTIA, be sure to check it out.

BlackBerry Messenger Not Coming to Android After All, Not Sure Anyone Cares Anymore

bbm black BlackBerry Messenger Not Coming to Android After All, Not Sure Anyone Cares Anymore

According to a report out of the Wall Street Journal, RIM is no longer looking to license its BlackBerry Messenger client to other platforms and will instead focus on creating additional features for it while pushing BlackBerry 10 and new devices. This move comes as somewhat of a shocker to many, as purported pictures of the service running on Android devices have appeared a couple of times now. There have also been countless rumors over the last year which suggested that RIM may try to leverage the popularity of the service to make some money for the company as their sales and market share continue to fall off cliffs.

My thoughts? Who cares. RIM had a chance to port this service over to Android and iOS a couple of years ago when it actually was still popular, but failed to do so. It's just another sign of a company that may no longer be with us in a couple of years – one that has made the wrong move over and over again.

Seriously ask yourself, would you all of a sudden switch your messaging life over to BBM should it launch on Android today? You have lived without it for years now, is it really an app that you need to survive? Had RIM made the move to license it back in 2009 when everyone was migrating from BlackBerry devices over to Android and iPhones, it would have been a big deal. Now, not so much.

After that, celebrate with friends and family, enjoy the sun and food, and do not drink and drive. End of lecture. icon smile This Week in the Life of Droid: 5/25/2012

Another solid week is in the books here at Droid Life as we head into a summer that should be a blast. We have Google I/O happening at the end of June, the Incredible 4G LTE any day now, the RAZR HD at some point, the Galaxy SIII potentially in a few weeks, and all sorts of Nexus tablet and Jelly Bean talk to stir up the fun. Until then, be sure to catch up on everything that happened this week, including ICS update schedules and the return of the 4.0.4 update for the Galaxy Nexus.

Again, be safe over the long weekend, but enjoy the heck out of it.

Samsung Galaxy S III coming to the US by June 20th?

The Samsung Galaxy S III goes on sale in Europe next week, but when is the device coming to the US? David Beren of TmoNews just posted T-Mobile's device roadmap for the next couple months and his sources say the device could launch as soon as June 20th.

Release dates are always subject to change, but it's a good sign that the device could be scheduled to hit our shores less than a month after the international version. Last year with the Galaxy S II, some US carriers did not launch the device until six months later.

We are still waiting to learn which US carriers will carry the Galaxy S III, but rumors and speculation suggest it will be coming to the AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, and possibly a couple regional carriers as well.

Additional rumored T-Mobile release dates include:

  • Samsung Galaxy S III 16GB Metallic Blue – June 20th
  • Samsung Galaxy S III 32GB Metallic Blue – June 20th
  • T-Mobile myTouch

"Verizon is going to have to pry that plan from my cold dead hands." Don't worry Sean Riley, you can keep that grandfathered unlimited data plan as long as you purchase your phone a full retail price.

Today Verizon issued an updated statement to address concerns from subscribers that thought they might be forced to give up their unlimited data plans as Verizon migrates to shared data plans this summer. Customers who take advantage of upgrade pricing will in fact lose their unlimited data, but as long as they pay full price for their device then they can keep the same plan.

Friday Poll: All Android or Do You Mix Up Platforms?

(Feel free to click around the Lytro image if you are bored.)

This morning, our boy Ron wrote up his opinion on the "fanboy" situation that plagues almost every tech community. Whether you own an iOS or Android or Blackberry device, someone is bound to call you a fanboy because you chose one over the other. At one time, Apple users were pegged as being the worst fanboys, but since, it has grown to include other platforms as well. Hell, even in the Android game you are starting to see groups of users band together as "Nexus fanboys" and/or "Motorola fanboys." It really doesn't matter what piece of technology is in your hand or on your desk, someone is bound to have a problem with it and thus refer to you as biased or as a fanboy.

But during his piece, Ron talked about removing the blinders and embracing "good" technology overall rather than siloing yourself into one platform or brand. I'll just say that as someone who runs an Android site and has dedicated his life to the platform, even I find myself branching out to other areas of tech until I find something I truly love. For example, my favorite tablet to this day is still probably the Blackberry Playbook. Had that sucker actually had an app ecosystem, I probably still be using it. On a computer level, brace yourself, I use an iMac and a Macbook Pro. I've been through every version of Windows since the early 90s and in the last year made the switch to OSX. So far, it has been a breath of fresh air.

So I'm just curious, since I know that many of you own iPads and other non-Android products, what your mix of technology is. Windows or Mac? iPad or Android tablet? Anything else?

Samsung Galaxy SIII Has Been Rooted.

sgs3 root 650x329 Samsung Galaxy SIII Has Been Rooted.

The Samsung Galaxy SIII has apparently been rooted by famed hacker Chainfire. As you know, the phone isn't even out yet, but this is good news for those planning to pick up the device in the coming weeks. He isn't able to release the "insecure" kernel yet as it may be traceable back to the source, so you'll just have to take his word for it. Knowing his track record with Samsung devices, that shouldn't be a problem.

Obviously, this root method has been done to the international version of the phone and not the U.S. variants, since they haven't even been announced yet. When those do arrive though, we're sure someone will figure it out there as well.

Why I bought a Galaxy Nexus from Google Play

The Nexus name has come under some serious fire lately; and I can't deny playing my part in that. Thanks to botched updates, carrier control and an absolutely horrendous initial rollout, Google's Nexus line just ain't what it used to be. So why then, did I just recently purchase a Galaxy Nexus as my next personal device? In a nutshell: everyone deserves a second chance.

When the Galaxy Nexus was announced, before the device was actually released, was when the problems first started. We knew the device would launch on Verizon here in the US, but it ended up taking much longer than initially expected. As for those of us not on Verizon, despite a GSM version of the device, compatible with both AT&T and T-Mobile HSPA, being detailed alongside the Verizon LTE version, there was no news of that version of the Galaxy Nexus coming to the US at all. In fact, even a Sprint version of the Nexus was detailed before a US GSM variant was.

After that, between the release of the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon in December and this April, a lot of crazy stuff went on. The CDMA version of the Nexus was labeled "fake" since Verizon practically has complete control of it, different versions of the international GSM Nexus were facing update problems as it was discovered carriers and Samsung also had control of those devices. And that's just the Galaxy Nexus. The Nexus S is still facing update issues, and the Nexus One has been left for dead. But there was still hope for the Nexus name, and it came in the form of the Google Play store.

When Google first announced they'd be selling the GSM version of the Galaxy Nexus direct to consumers out of the Google Play store, I was ecstatic. The "Pure Google. No Contract. No Commitment." slogan on the banner for the Nexus' sale page had me excited. The software information page for the Play version of the Galaxy Nexus is what had me sold.

"A Galaxy Nexus purchased on Google Play is a Pure Google device and is among the first to receive the latest software updates from Google. We are pushing out updates to Nexus devices as quickly as possible and we will continue to provide the latest updates to these devices going forward. For devices purchased on Google Play, you can expect software updates to come directly from Google, rather than your mobile service provider."

Could this finally be it? The Nexus I've been waiting for? It certainly seems like it. I know Google has messed up in the past, and I know it still has a huge PenTile display (which is what originally deterred me from wanting the Galaxy Nexus). But if Google were to, say, announce and release Jelly Bean at I/O this year, this would have to be the device to get it first. Seeing a new version of Android being released and not being able to use it right away is some strange from of torture I wouldn't wish on even the most obnoxious of Android enthusiasts.

And to top it all off, a totally unlocked PentaBand device that is guaranteed to get updates directly from Google surely must cost at least $600. Right? The fact that Google is able to get the Galaxy Nexus directly to consumers for just $400 is nothing short of a miracle. Even with tax and shipping, I only paid $435. That is incredibly cheap in terms of brand new unlocked phones. Plus I was able to pass my Nexus S down to a budding Android enthusiast at a steep discount to knock some money off that $435 as well.

Looking past the price and updates, more than anything, I want the Nexus name to succeed. Not in the way that analysts and carrier CEOs do. In the way the developers and die-hard fans do. I know I've badmouthed the Nexus name recently, but it's only because I felt personally betrayed. Not many companies can do that to me, which really says something about the place Google holds in my life.

So I ordered a Galaxy Nexus from the Google Play store. And I'm really hoping for the best. Google, please don't let me down again.

As suspected, Verizon won’t be getting an HTC One device

There's no beating around the bush; most of us on staff here at Android and Me love the HTC One series of devices. I had a chance this weekend to spend some hands-on time with the HTC One X from AT&T, and was completely blown away by both the look and build quality of the device.

At CTIA last week, Verizon Wireless announced the mid-range Droid Incredible 4G LTE by HTC. The Droid Incredible 4G LTE is not a One device, and HTC Spokesman Jeff Gordon indicated to Android Authority

This new system will also come in handy for people with hearing or speech disabilities by allowing people to text 911 to report emergencies.

The FCC has been planning to upgrade their call centers to receive texts and photos even for a few years now, and it seems that things are finally moving in that direction. Somewhere near 70% of all 911 calls come from mobile phones these days it only makes sense that the technology gets scaled up to the times. Verizon expects to start rolling out the service in early 2013 in metropolitan areas.

Wednesday Poll: Headphone Jack on the Bottom or Top?

headphone3 650x432 Wednesday Poll: Headphone Jack on the Bottom or Top?

It's time to settle this debate once and for all (because polls can do that). Yes, we are talking about headphone jack placement on smartphones. The DL crew wishes that all phone manufacturers going forward would do the right thing (biased much?) and put headphone jacks on the bottoms of phones, because it simply makes sense.

If the jack is on the bottom, you can plug in your headphones and the headphone cable stays out of your way as it drapes below the phone. Also, when you go to place the phone in your pocket in the natural way, which is top down, then the headphone jack points upwards and out of your pocket. If the headphone jack is up top, the cord then becomes a nagging issue and is either draping off to the side, behind, or in often times in front of your phone. Then, as you go to place it in your pocket, you have to consciously make an effort to adjust (possibly break) your wrist to slide the phone in bottom side down so that the cord sticks out of your pocket. (That makes my entire forearm hurt just thinking about the maneuver.)

So tell us, which do you prefer and why. Also, to further our argument, we dove deep into the logistics, creating evidence in most proper of ways – yes, GIFs.

Can you believe it? Tomorrow is finally the day that everyone in the Android world has been waiting for. Samsung will unveil the Galaxy SIII or "next Galaxy" at 11AM Pacific. The event will be broadcast live via Facebook for you all to watch, but we plan to have a live blog around these parts as well, since this is the most anticipated tech device to launch in some time. The Galaxy Nexus was a big deal, but after seeing how many smartphones Samsung shipped in the last quarter, we aren't sure that it's fair to even compare the two. This is huge.

So what can we expect to see? After months of rumors and speculation, it will all be official tomorrow. That won't stop us from diving into it all one last time to make some predictions. Follow along below.

After yesterday's review of the AT&T HTC One X, many Sprint fans are even more excited to get their hands on the EVO 4G LTE.

Verizon’s public beta test of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus could be coming to an end soon

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is an amazing phone, but customers who purchased the Verizon version have not been too happy with the device because of a number of bugs. After nearly 5 months of waiting, it appears that Verizon could be close to releasing a software update that resolves many of the known issues that users have been complaining about.

Verizon customers with the Galaxy Nexus are still running Android 4.0.2 (unless they hacked their device), while most other Galaxy Nexus models have already moved on to Android 4.0.4. The latest update included over 100 changes and fixed many of the annoying bugs that people were complaining about.

This week several lucky Verizon subscribers started reporting that their device received an upgrade to Android 4.0.4 over the air. This latest software package included a build number,

New Firefox Aims to Create Uniform Experience Across Desktop, Phones and Tablets

A presentation by Mozilla's Madhava Enros has surfaced online, giving us a look at the future of their popular browser, better known as Firefox. In the slides, you can quickly figure out what the goal is here – to create a browser that looks and feels the same across all platforms, hence the "distinctive and unified" mention at the top of the first slide. Over the last few months, they merged their mobile and desktop teams to hopefully make this dream come true.

The motto for this new project seems to be "soft, friendly, and human," and that makes sense. After cruising through the slides, I sort of see what they are getting at with the curves, soft colors, and simple approach (wait, is that human?). In the presentation, you will find a number of pictures that represent the Firefox team's ideas for the future of the browser. Be sure to check it out at the source link below.

Google Play Adds Carrier Billing Support of Movies, Music, and Apps for Multiple Carriers – No Verizon Love Yet

Google has launched additional carrier billing support on the Play Store for three out of the four major wireless carriers in America, excluding Verizon. Not that Google didn't offer, but we have a feeling Verizon decided to decline the service for reasons unbeknownst. Previously, AT&T and T-Mobile customers could charge applications to their monthly bill, but now users can checkout movies, books, and even music straight on to their wireless bill. So, what's up Verizon? When can Big Red subscribers get in on the action?

When the new IMM76K Android 4.0.4 update leaked yesterday for the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon, many of us focused immediately on the new radios that came with it. Could these solve many of the hand-off issues and failures to attach to 4G networks that owners have experienced since day one? Only one way to find out and that's by flashing them to your phone. Thanks to XDA member mwalt2, a flashable .zip is available for you after the break.

T-Mobile wants to pay you $100 to ‘buy’ the HTC Sensation 4G

While most of us are concerned with getting the best phone money can buy, there are some who are always on the lookout for the best deals from places like Amazon Wireless and the big four service providers. There are always offers for free phones, but it's not often that you get paid $100 to "buy" a dual-core powered Android phone.

If you're a T-Mobile customer (or have been waiting for a good excuse to switch to T-Mobile), you can now purchase the HTC Sensation 4G for free when signing up for a new two year contract. On top of that, you can take advantage of T-Mobile's latest Magenta Deal Days offer and get an extra $100 back when you trade-in a qualifying smartphone.

The HTC Sensation 4G may not be as good as the HTC One S, but it is still a great device and will be updated to Android 4.0 sometime soon. The Magenta Deal Days offer lasts until May 7, but the free web-only HTC Sensation 4G deal ends on May 3.

Are any of you willing to get paid $100 to "buy" the HTC Sensation 4G?
