“When Do You Think We’ll be Able to do That Thing?” Asks iSheep in Latest Samsung Spots

0

Oh Samsung, such a clever bunch. After releasing a full 90 second spot that pokes fun at Apple fans waiting in line for the iPhone 5, they return today with two shorter spots. They cover topics from the longer commercial, only this time they take some extra jabs, like by having a mom confirm with her Galaxy S3 owning son that "this is the line for apps" as if that's all the iPhone is good for.

Another girl watches NFC sharing in action and then wonders when iPhone owners wil be "able to do that thing?" Not for a while I'm afraid, dear iPhone owners. Maybe next year.

Samsung uploads a pair of new ads making fun of iSheep

Last week Samsung released a new add making fun of people waiting to buy an iPhone 5, and it has already been viewed 15 million times on YouTube. The 90 second clip has seen heavy rotation on prime time TV and now Samsung has produced two more 30 second ad spots to add to the mix. Both new ads feature some parts out of the longer spot, but there are a couple new scenes that made me laugh out loud. Watch the ads below and let us know what you think. Kim Dotcom teases the Android app that will put the major music labels out of business

Megaupload was one of the largest sites on the Internet at its peak with over 50 million visitors per day. Then the US Government took down the site on charges of criminal copyright infringement and arrested its founder Kim Dotcom. A month later he was released from jail and started working on his next project Megabox.

The new service will focus on music sharing and Kim Dotcom promises he is going to "Turn this world upside down." On Twitter he said that Megabox will be "Bigger. Better. Faster. Free of charge & shielded from attacks."

Once again the government stepped in and seized the Megabox domain as part of their criminal case against Megaupload, but Dotcom says the new service is not dead.

Today Mr. Dotcom uploaded a new teaser video to YouTube with the message, "This is what they don't want you to have.

Bad move Apple: ditching Google Maps is a huge mistake for consumers

When two partners in business slowly make the transition to rival companies, there are bound to be some casualties. Apple and Google are perfect examples of this. As each company tries to find their happy medium of involvement with each other, services are going to be killed, support squashed and new alliances formed. Consumers should never be at a disadvantage because of it, but that's exactly what has happened with Apple introducing their own mapping service instead of sticking with Google's.

Fans of Apple's iOS and Google's Android often find themselves in heated debates on just about any difference you can come up with between the two platforms. Discussing mobile policy and how it affects the future of technology is healthy. Especially when both sides can respect each other. Unfortunately, it doesn't always work like that.

One of the oldest arguments between Android and iOS fans boils down to the specs and services each platform boasts. "The iPhone can barely hold a candle to last generation's Android phones! Let Alone the flagships," Android fans shout out in the comments. "Apple doesn't need to jump on the spec bandwagon. They're all about making changes for the sake of consumer good," reply the Apple fans. In my eyes, both the Android and Apple fan are right. Android phones do tend to be more experimental, always on the cutting edge of technology. And if Apple doesn't see a huge benefit, or enough of a tradeoff, for adding a new feature or service, they won't. Or at least they didn't.

Now that iPhone 5 reviews are starting to trickle online from all sorts of respected technology publications, and there are a couple common themes being echoed by those who have spent some quality time with the device. One of which is that the move away from Google Maps is bad. Even John Gruber, who is well noted for his love of Apple and everything they do, took to his blog where he rounds up quips and quotes related to his interests to say that it, "seems pretty clear the new Maps is going to be the biggest problem with iOS 6." He then goes on to say that it might not be Apple's fault though. Who knows if Google wouldn't play, or if Apple is just being arrogant.

The bottom line is this: it's unanimous, Apple's new maps suck compared to Google Maps. There's entire websites dedicated to it. Finding venues is hard, directions are wonky, and search is lacking. In the past, Apple was known as the company who would go above and beyond for the sake of consumers. They didn't include LTE in the iPhone until this year because LTE support wasn't wide spread, and because battery life took a hit. But this is different.

Apple is essentially screwing consumers out of the best experience possible because they don't want to improve Google Maps any more, by providing Google with precious data. Google has done the exact opposite recently. Google is working hard to release as many apps on iOS as possible. And they aren't half-baked ports or dumbed down Android apps. Apple let Google take the reigns with YouTube, and Google made it better. Google has released a robust Google+ app, an app for Google Drive and a search app very similar to what's available in Jelly Bean out of the box.

You can argue that Google is doing it just to get as many people using its services as possible because that's how they make money, but that doesn't matter. Those apps make the iPhone a better device for consumers. Apple's maps do not.

It's also being argued that once iPhone users start ditching Google Maps and use Apple's native solution, Google's experience will get worse, and Apple's will only get better. Give me a break. Usage is only a fraction of the equation. Google is still light years ahead of Apple in maps, and in case everyone has forgotten, Android owns nearly 70% of the overall global smartphone marketshare.

Even if Apple maps do catch up, it could take years. Years that iPhone users are being forced to use an inferior service because Apple wants Google as far away from iOS as possible. How could you possibly defend that?

The only reasonable response I'd even begin to entertain is that Google will be releasing their own Maps app for iOS, so everybody kinda-sorta wins. Apple gets more map data and gets to cut Google out of the equation, and Google gets complete control over how Maps works on iOS devices. But even that still isn't in consumer's best interests.

The platform wars are bad for consumers, there's no doubt about it. But rarely, so far, do the battles between companies have a direct, immediate affect on consumers. With Apple cutting out Google and choosing to implement their own mapping solution, consumers are being punished. Not cool, Apple. Not cool.

Top Android phones go head to head in Vellamo 2.0 benchmark

Are benchmarks useful for anything more than bragging rights? It's a question we could debate for hours, but Qualcomm just released their new Vellamo 2.0 benchmark suite and we decided to take it for a spin with a handful of Android devices to see if we could form any drive-by conclusions. Read on to see seven Android devices go head-to-head and find out who comes out on top.

The Video

The Download

Grab Vellamo Mobile Benchmark 2.0 from the download link below. If you want to compare your results, make sure you go into the Vellamo settings and set Repeat Benchmarks to average five runs.

The Devices

We ran Vellamo 2.0 on a variety of Android smartphones to see what the results could tell us. I chose the latest flagship devices from HTC, LG, and Samsung, and threw in the Nexus 7 tablet just for fun.

  • AT&T HTC One X (Snapdragon S4 Plus, 4.0.3)
  • Unlocked HTC One X (Tegra 3, Android 4.0.4)
  • T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S III (Snapdragon S4 Plus, Android )
  • Unlocked LG Optimus 4X HD (Tegra 3, Android 4.0.3)
  • Verizon Galaxy Nexus (OMAP4, Android 4.0.4)
  • Unlocked Galaxy Nexus (OMAP4, Android 4.1.1)
  • Nexus 7 (Tegra 3, Android 4.1.1)

The Results

Each device was rebooted before I started the benchmark and then I let it run five times to get the average score.

Last Fish 650x318 Last Fish for Android, Artsy Black and White Animations That Look Smooth

Over on Google Play, I came across an artsy black and white game that I've taken quite a liking too. What helped me was that it was also rated quite well which never hurts. The game is called Last Fish and it takes place in the darkest of waters. You're fish that must fight to find food, avoid shadows, and be on the look out for nasty goo. It uses some pretty good tilt controls which actual adds character to the game without the need of on-screen controls that would most likely get in the way.

Things have not been looking up for Samsung in court recently. Today, we have another Friday ruling against the company going into the weekend that doesn't look so hot. Samsung filed against Apple with the International Trade Commission with patents having to do with 3G technologies.

ITC Judge James Gildea ruled against Samsung on the 4 patents that Apple was charged with infringing upon. Samsung wanted bans in the US, but that isn't going to happen anymore. This is nowhere near as big as the earlier verdict that Samsung lost, but it seems they just can't catch a break these days.

Motorola announces Android cloud computer for China

Today in China, Motorola revealed their new Android-powered CloudBB (HMC3260), which is being described as a "home entertainment terminal." The device features an 18.5 inch touchscreen display paired with a wireless keyboard and mouse. China Digitial TV Media Group will market the device to their 13 million customers as a way to watch on-demand video, launch games and applications, and access other cloud-based entertainment services.

We don't expect this product to be available in the US, but it could be a preview of what's in store for future Android devices from Motorola.

Android can almost replace a PC, but the overall experience is not quite there. Google is working on multi-user support for shared devices and optimizing Android to run on faster hardware, and we think it's only a mater of time before Google or Motorola release another all-in-one device. Motorola was one of the first companies to release a smartphone that could turn into a laptop or PC, but it never really took off.

We have asked the question many times, but what does Android need to offer if you are going to give up your desktop computer? Would you rather have an all-in-one desktop PC or a smartphone that could turn into a laptop, tablet or PC?

When the Android team initially introduced us to Ice Cream Sandwich, one of the first features they showed off was the ability to quickly create folders of apps. And trust me, that's a good thing because it doesn't get any easier than this.

These are the types of weeks we live for. We had big companies announcing big products and there was something for everyone. Looking for a new smartphone? Motorola announced three new RAZRs that would certainly fit into anyone's lifestyle. Maybe shopping for a new tablet? Amazon has six new slates that look very professional. Here are the week's highlights if you missed anything.

Have a great weekend!

Amazon’s Kindle Fire gets spec bump, price drop to $159

The 7-inch and 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HDs are the headliners here, but the original Kindle Fire is still alive and has gotten a not insignificant spec boost while shaving 20% off the price.

At $159 the Kindle Fire will again stand alone on the bottom rung of the Android tablet pricing ladder (among the major players anyway).

We'll fill in all the details as they emerge, but the most notable upgrades to the 7″ Kindle Fire are a 20% increase in the processor and double the RAM for a 40% increase in performance. They have also extended the battery life from the original, which was rated for 8 hours of reading and 7.5 hours of video.

The new Kindle Fire will ship on September 14, but you can pre-order any of the new Kindles now.

This refreshed Kindle Fire can't really go toe to toe with the Nexus 7 on performance or functionality (the new Fire HDs may be a different story), but at $159 and with the most valuable advertising space on the web, they are sure to move quite a few of them regardless.

Update: Interesting note that Amazon was a little quiet about during the announcement is that all the new Fires will have special offers (ads) on the lock screen.

Mysterious HTC Device Pictured With Verizon Red Accents, is This the 1080p 5″ Device?

Care to take a guess as to what this phone is? It popped up over at Chinese forum Phone HK, and appears to be an HTC device with the red accents that Verizon loves to use. That's speculation of course, but we do know that Big Red and HTC have teamed up to produce a phone with a 1080p full HD display codenamed "dlx." Is this it?

Motorola rumored to reveal phone with edge-to-edge screen, sans-bezel

Motorola has scheduled two press events this month and Bloomberg is reporting that one of the devices will feature an "edge-to-edge screen." Both of the invites sent out to media hinted at a new display, so this latest reports sounds plausible.

On September 5th Motorola will hold an event with Verizon in New York. The invite said "Motorola. On Display" and we were expecting to see the Droid RAZR HD and Droid RAZR M. After that Motorola has an event with Intel on September 18th. The invite for the second event said "Let us take you to the edge."

Bloomberg says the edge-to-edge display should come this week in New York, but we think the 2nd event in London is a more likely target. We have already seen the RAZR HD leak out several times, and the display has a bezel on all edges. Motorola's first smartphone with an Intel processor is a little more mysterious, and no pictures have surfaced so far.

Either way, it is pretty exciting to hear that Motorola will
