Google Experienced Short Outage Across Multiple Services

New Google Logo 650x233 Google Experienced Short Outage Across Multiple Services

The internet felt as if it had died moments ago, as almost all of Google's services seemed to have experienced an outage. The outage only lasted a couple of minutes at most, but Gmail, Voice, Reader, Google+, YouTube, etc. were all down.

Hopefully, you all survived. There may have been a minor freakout happening over at DL HQ…

Hurricane Sandy might finally be clearing up, but the destruction left in her wake is just now starting to be assessed. Sandy didn't ease up on our precious cell towers, so to shoulder the load of all those calls,

Nexus 4 LG Wednesday Poll: What Would It Take to Get You to Buy the LG Nexus 4?

On Monday, after Google announced the LG Nexus 4, we asked the DL community if they were ready to buy one. Almost 70% of readers said "No" for a variety of reasons. The lack of LTE came up quite a bit, the lack of removable storage and the limited internal storage were there as well. Most of you are Verizon customers, so the fact that the phone won't work on their network was also a big negative.

If there was something that you could definitively change though, that would get you to pull the trigger, what would it be? Would it need to be subsidized on Verizon? What if it had LTE, but was only available on AT&T? You tell me.

Samsung Smart Dock turns your smartphone into a desktop

We already know that Android is on the path to taking over desktops and laptops, and this new Smart Dock accessory from Samsung proves that point. The Galaxy Smart Dock allows your phone to provide a desktop experience by connecting an HD monitor, external storage device, and USB keyboard and mouse.

The $99 dock features three USB ports, one HDMI port, and 3.5 mm stereo out. This specific dock was designed for the Galaxy Note II, but it appears to also work with the Galaxy S III. We just got a couple Galaxy Note IIs in house to play around with, so we will be sure to pick up this dock and let you know how it performs.

As cool as this dock is, the latest smartphones running Android 4.2 should be able to connect to most devices without wires. The Nexus 4 for example rest on its wireless charging station, send video to a Miracast-enabled

The Nexus 4 is sold unlocked and is GSM/HSPA+ compatible so it will operate on more than 200 network providers worldwide, including AT&T and T-Mobile in the US. The Nexus 4 supports networks up to 4G HSPA+ 42Mbps, which happens to be offered by T-Mobile, the official Nexus 4 launch partner. AT&T's 4G HSPA+ network only supports max speeds of 21 Mbps.

Summary: T-Mobile Monthly 4G is our top pick since they offer the cheapest pre-paid plans. Their basic $30 plan includes up to 5GB of full-speed 4G HSPA+ data, but it is only limited to 100 minutes talk time. Carphone Warehouse leaks pre-order page for Nexus 4, reveals Gesture Typing, 360 camera, Oct. 30 release

In a move that is sure to upset Google, online retailer Carphone Warehouse has leaked a pre-order page for the often-rumored Nexus 4. It feels like we already know everything about this device, but this new product listing includes a few minor details we've never seen before. Best of all, the site says the highly anticipated device will be released on October 30.

Confirmed specs include Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, 4.7-inch

Samsung Nexus 10 quick start guide leaked?

There have been no shortages of rumors when it comes to what Google will unveil at its Android event scheduled for this coming Monday. At this point we're expecting lowered prices on the Nexus 7, a new 3G enabled Nexus 7, the LG Nexus 4 and quite possibly a 10-inch tablet manufactured by Samsung known only as the Nexus 10. Today, we got our first real solid leak on the Nexus 10 in the form of a quick start guide from Korean site Seeko.

According to the quick start guide, the Nexus 10 will look nothing like the Nexus 7 and more like the Galaxy Note 10.1. Which doesn't bode well for build quality. The design renders in the book seem to indicate a more rounded slab, with some sort of strip across the back where the camera is housed. There's also a Nexus logo that looks identical to the one on the Nexus 7, and the one rumored to grace the back of the Nexus 4, as well as a Samsung logo.

Unfortunately the quick start guide doesn't tell us anything specs wise (no mention of that 2560×1600 display), but it does show that the Nexus 10 will feature a micro USB port, micro HDMI port, charging port, headphone jack, front- and rear-facing cameras and a notification LED.

There's no way to tell if this Nexus 10 quick start guide is real or not, but if a 10-inch tablet is set to be revealed by Google this coming Monday, it would make sense for them to already be in production. Still, don't take this as fact quite yet. If it is real, we will most definitely be buying one. How about you?

T-Mobile’s Galaxy Note 2 Has Hidden LTE Support, Could Be Utilized After Future Update

galaxy note 2 US 650x625 T Mobile's Galaxy Note 2 Has Hidden LTE Support, Could Be Utilized After Future Update

The Galaxy Note 2 is poised to take over America and each carrier wants to make their device as good, if not better than the others. An interesting look into the guts of the T-Mobile Note 2 however, showed that the hardware is there for LTE support. The AT&T and T-Mobile versions are pretty much similar, except for the fact that one carrier has many LTE markets and one has none.

T-Mobile plans to reach more than 200 million Americans with LTE by the end of 2013. The Galaxy Note II will not automatically access T-Mobile's LTE network. We will share more information on how and when the Galaxy Note II will support T-Mobile's upcoming LTE network when the network is available.

Certainly hopeful on T-Mobile's part from the sounds of it. When T-Mo's LTE does go live this will require a system update to activate, but the network has to be there first. We hope they get in gear and get that network going sooner rather than later.

Verizon Targets November 29 as Launch Day for Galaxy Note 2

Verizon Targets November 29 as Launch Day for Galaxy Note 2

Big Red announced pre-orders this morning for the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, yet would only go as far as "coming weeks" for a launch date or for when customers could expect to see those pre-orders. When you checked out during the pre-order process, an expected shipping date of November 27 was mentioned, so the screenshot above which pegs November 29 as the official launch certainly makes sense. We should also point out that a number of well-placed readers have mentioned November 29 as the launch date for the Note 2 on Verizon in the comments of a variety of our posts, but we wanted to share this to help back up those claims.

Assuming nothing bad happens over the next few weeks, I'd say the 29th of November is the big day. Can you patiently wait a month?

Sprint Galaxy S III Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update available now

The race to be the first US carrier to update their Galaxy S III to Android 4.1, Jelly Bean, is officially over. As of this morning, Sprint was the first to cross the finish line in offering the latest major Android update to S III users on their network.

Not long ago, Samsung released a statement telling US Galaxy S III users to expect an update to Android 4.1.1 in the coming months. In the past, that meant you had at least a month to wait — if not closer to three or four. But here we are, just one week after Samsung's announcement, and Sprint is already sending out the update to Jelly Bean to S III users everywhere.

Android 4.1.1 for the Sprint Galaxy S III will include access to Google Now, expandable notifications, Android Beam, automatic widget resizing, camera enhancements and more. Of course it won't be stock Jelly Bean, but Samsung has added some useful features in the latest version of Touchwiz.

No word yet on when we can expect Jelly Bean to hit other carrier-branded devices. We'll be keeping an eye out. Sprint S III users, have you received the update yet? First impressions?

3G Nexus 7 passes through the FCC, just in time for Oct. 29

Want some substantial evidence that Google will be releasing a Nexus 7 equipped with 3G next Monday? Look no further than a trusty FCC filing detailing the device.

Labeled as the ME370TG (the WiFi only Nexus 7 was labeled ME370T), the Nexus 7 with 3G radios has just passed through the FCC, tagged with a certification date of October 29, the date of Google's Android event in New York City.

We've been expecting Google to unveil a 3G enabled Nexus 7 at its Android event for quite some time now. This filing with the FCC all but finally confirms the device's existence. Of course it's not official until it's official, but we throughly expect the Nexus 7 3G to be real. Only four more days until we know for sure.

AT&T announces Sony XPERIA TL launch date, price

The XPERIA TL is the latest flagship Android phone from Sony. We've know for a while that the device was destined to show up on AT&T's network this fall, and now we've finally received official launch details from the carrier. The Sony XPERIA TL will be available online and in AT&T stores starting on November 2 for $99.99 with a two-year contract. AT&T has not announced the subsidized price of the XPERIA TL, but we can assume it will be somewhere between $400 and $500.

Specs on the Sony XPERIA TL include a 4.55-inch 1280×720 display, 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm S4 processor, 1GB of RAM, microSD card slot, 13 megapixel rear camera with 1080p video capture, 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera, NFC, LTE, WiFi a/b/g/n and a 1850 mAh battery. Unfortunately, the impressive specs are used to run Android 4.0.4, but we suspect the XPERIA TL will be one of the first Sony devices upgraded to Android 4.1.

Check out AT&T's Mobile Minute video below for a 60-second overview of the Sony XPERIA TL. It finally feels like Sony's hardware is on par with its competition, but we feel they may be a little too late to the party.

Whenever we ask our readers to give us specs that they would like to see in a "dream device," you would most certainly see a few, if not all of the Optimus G's listed. Although, LG isn't pushing the Optimus like Samsung is pushing the Galaxy S3 and you won't see this device on all four major U.S. carriers. Customers on AT&T and Sprint will only see the device, but more importantly, the next Nexus device is rumored to be based around this phone, so it makes reviewing this device's hardware and look somewhat more important than others.

Nexus 4 once again shows it front side and back side

We have already seen the Nexus 4 from every conceivable angle and we know most of its specs, but we still have 10 days of waiting before Google announces the device on October 29th. The leaks are still flowing in, but it's mostly a rehash of things we have known for the past month. Today a pair of new pics surfaced with details that confirmed the device will feature a 2100 mAh battery.

First we had our favorite leaker @evleaks post a shot of the front of the device, then Alex Dobie of Android Central shared a shot of the device with the back cover removed. The battery was not meant to be user replaceable, but someone was able to pop off the back plate by removing the screws at the bottom.

These are not exactly the most exciting photos, but at least we know the battery capacity of the devices in testing. We would love to see a MAXX-sized battery in the 3000+ mAh territory, but maybe Google has a few tricks in Android 4.2 to extend the battery life. Nothing is really final until Google makes their announcement, so things are always subject to change.

Go ahead and call me a Nexus fanboy, because I'm going to buy this device no matter what's on the inside.

When Motorola first unveiled the new RAZR family at the beginning of September, they told us that they wouldn't be able to update all of their previously released devices to Jelly Bean (Android 4.1). Since they had too large of a portfolio and would need to leave some out of the fun, they mentioned that owners of these devices would be able to buy a new Motorola phone and then trade in their old phone for $100. They posted the list of devices, this afternoon, which we have below.

LG Spectrum Ice Cream Sandwich Update VS920ZV7 Approved by Verizon!

lg spectrum ics1 505x650 LG Spectrum Ice Cream Sandwich Update VS920ZV7 Approved by Verizon!

Quite the week for Verizon, I'd say. The LG Spectrum Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0.4) was approved moments ago, making this the third of the week from Big Red. This update was due months ago, so owners of the Spectrum are probably ecstatic with this news. That is, if they haven't chucked their phone into a wall and picked up a Galaxy S3 yet.

The update introduces an update UI, with lockscreen shortcuts, new ICS multi-tasking, data management, better notifications, quick settings in the notifications pulldown, power saving modes, Verizon's Remote Diagnostics tool, and more. As one would expect, this update is massive and should completely re-enhance the user experience on the Spectrum.

Typically, when these documents go live, the update starts to rollout within a matter of days. Be sure to let us know when you receive it!

The update is 384MB in size.

Several industry analysts believe Google and Samsung are working on a Nexus 10 tablet, but there have been conflicting reports about when the device will be unveiled. Some think it will come this year and others are pointing at the first half of next year. The first Jelly Bean build for Motorola's new lineup of RAZRs has leaked this weekend, and the DROD RAZR M is the beneficiary (Blur version 98.11.35). As you can probably guess, this is a first build and probably not the OTA update that this device will eventually see, so if you would like to flash it, just understand that there is a chance that you will be stuck on this build. At this time, there are not fastboot files available for the RAZR M, so again, if you jump to this, be prepared to be there for a while.

With that said, you do not need to be rooted to do this. You can flash this update right over top of your current 77.111.10 Android 4.0.4 build, hence the name of the file.

AT&T Shortens Return Policy to 14 Days, Holds Hands With Verizon

att logo 650x650 AT&T Shortens Return Policy to 14 Days, Holds Hands With Verizon

At the beginning of 2011, Verizon changed its return policy to a measly 14 days, meaning you had two weeks to decide if you liked a phone enough to keep it for 2 years. Almost two years later, and AT&T has joined the party, reducing their 30-day policy to 14 days as well. If you buy a phone from AT&T and return it within 2 weeks, you will pay only a restocking fee. If you try to return a phone after 14 days, you will be stuck with an early termination fee as well.

We have no idea who is making these devices, even if some are jumping to the wild conclusion that they are made by Motorola. While we would love to see a Motorola Nexus, a codename is just not enough to go on to assume that this is made by them. For all we know, the "occam" is the oft-rumored LG Nexus phone and the "manta" is the Nexus 10 made by Samsung.
