New Amazon App Store for Android

Today Amazon officially unveiled their Android application store with 3800 apps. Why did Amazon launch their own app store? There are a few reasons that we can think of. Chief among them is that Amazon wants to be a part of the huge app store industry and reap profits. Second, Amazon has a huge asset they can use to promote and sell apps…their website! And finally, Amazon already has your credit card on file, making it super easy for you to buy apps from them. So how is the app store? The interface is quite nice, but we found ourselves missing the “geeky” green color of the Android market. We were appreciate of the free offering for new Angry Birds Rio, but were quickly sobered by the overall lack of selection of apps. While there isn’t a high quantity of apps, most of the basics are covered. If you happen to buy an app from the Amazon app store that you already own from the Amazon app store, you’ll get a notification that will give you a chance to cancel your order, which is a good feature. Download the Amazon app store by going to amzn.to/getappstore, and let us know what you think! Website: pocketnow.com Facebook www.facebook.com Twitter: twitter.com

Swiftkey releases SDK; manufacturers can now make use of mind-reading technology

Swiftkey X has become one of the most popular third-party keyboards in the Android Market. With over 5 million downloads, this mind-reading keyboard is saving millions of keystrokes around the globe. This is all thanks to its unbelievable prediction and correction capabilities, which will now be available for all manufacturers thanks to the SDK that Swiftkey has just launched.

With this Software Developer Kit, manufacturers will be able to incorporate Swiftkey's impressive typing technology to an abundance of devices and platforms. This is made possible through access to Swiftkey's language engine. So we might soon see devices with native keyboards that can predict and correct as amazingly as Swiftkey X can.

As we are interacting with more devices, technology that accurately understands what a user is trying to say or do with their devices is vital. It only takes a cursory look at user groups to realize that typing is one of the biggest frustrations that people have on tablets and smartphones. The launch of our SDK will give OEMs access to better typing experience, with their own look and feel.Dr. Ben MedlockCTO of Swiftkey

As mentioned, this SDK supports pretty much all operating systems. Platforms and languages include the following:

  • Android
  • C++
  • iOS
  • JVM (Java, Scala)
  • Linux
  • Mac OS X
  • .NET (C#, VB)
  • QNX/BlackBerry 10
  • WebOS
  • Windows

Very soon, we might see Swiftkey technology embedded straight into devices. So stay tuned for more about this, as Swiftkey does happen to be a favorite for a great percentage of our readers. How many of you would like to see this technology embedded into all these platforms and devices?

SwiftKey Launches SDK for Handset and Device Manufacturers

OEMs Can Integrate SwiftKey's Powerful Language Technology Into Their Devices to Improve Core Typing Experience

Barcelona, Spain — February 27, 2012 – SwiftKey™ (http://www.swiftkey.net), the company behind the award-winning SwiftKey X keyboard for Android™ smartphones, is making the core language-engine technology that powers its app available to OEMs. The move will allow handset and device manufacturers to embed SwiftKey's smart language technology into their own devices through a Software Development Kit (SDK).

SwiftKey X has already proven immensely popular as a stand-alone app. It has been downloaded more than five million times, making it one of the most popular paid for applications on the planet in its category. In addition, SwiftKey's technology has been shortlisted for the Most Innovative App in this year's GSMA Global Mobile Awards at Mobile World Congress.

The SDK enables tablet and handset manufacturers to offer cutting edge prediction and correction technology in their products, powered by SwiftKey's Natural Language Processing language engine. OEMs can build SwiftKey's core technology into their own keyboard and UI, to improve the core user experience of their devices. The SDK introduces a range of new features in addition to those currently available on SwiftKey X, with support for over 40 languages, including Arabic, Korean and Spanish.

Dr Ben Medlock, CTO of SwiftKey explains: "As we are interacting with more devices, technology that accurately understands what a user is trying to say or do with their devices is vital. It only takes a cursory look at user groups to realize that typing is one of the biggest frustrations that people have on tablets and smartphones. The launch of our SDK will give OEMs access to better typing experience, with their own look and feel."

"The SDK will also enable other consumer technology devices, beyond the tablet and smartphone, to receive the benefits of our unique language engine. We have already seen interesting applications of our language engine in Smart TVs and assistive technology devices."

SwiftKey SDK supports the following platforms and languages:

Android
C++
iOS
JVM (Java, Scala)
Linux
Mac OS X
.NET (C#, VB)
QNX/BlackBerry 10
WebOS
Windows

About SwiftKey
SwiftKey makes typing much easier on Android smartphones, replacing the touchscreen keyboard with one powered by smarter natural language technology. The app, which launched in beta in July 2010, understands how words work together to give much more accurate corrections and predictions than other keyboards. It also powerfully learns over time to make typing easier and even more accurate, and users can personalize it using Gmail, Facebook, Twitter, SMS or their blog posts.

To date SwiftKey has received more than five million downloads, saving users more than 30 billion keystrokes: equivalent to over 350 years spent typing.

TouchType Ltd, the company behind SwiftKey, was founded in August 2008 by Jon Reynolds, CEO, and Dr Ben Medlock, CTO, both Cambridge University graduates. With a growing team of over 30 people, the company is based in Southwark, London, UK.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 Launching on Verizon March 1

tab 7.7 release 650x531 Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 Launching on Verizon March 1

Verizon and Samsung announced their newest 4G LTE tablet dubbed the Galaxy Tab 7.7 at CES back in January. A release date did not accompany that announcement, but we have it for you today. March 1 is their target – that would be this Thursday – with a price of $499 on contract or $699 off. While that price will likely turn everyone off, we were impressed by the device itself when we fondled it for a couple of minutes at the beginning of the year. It's powerful, ultra slim, has a beautiful screen, and will power through any task you throw at it while remaining portable. You can check out that video after the break.

neo and ultra 650x432 Case Review: Spigen SGP Neo Hybrid and Ultra Capsule for the Galaxy Nexus

The fine folks at Spigen SGP sent over their series of Galaxy Nexus cases to review and we came away fairly impressed with all of them for the most part. They included three different types, but our focus was on the Neo Hybrid and Ultra Capsule cases. These both fit nicely onto the LTE Nexus even though Spigen designed them initially for the GSM version. And actually, I prefer the fit of these cases on the LTE Nexus over the GSM variant. Jump below to see our hands-on time with both.

samsung galaxy tab 7 lte 650x418 Verizon Confirms March 1 for the Galaxy Tab 7.7 LTE, Also the $499 2 Year Contract Price

Verizon confirmed our report from yesterday that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 LTE would be arriving officially on March 1 (this Thursday). If interested, you can pick one up for $499 on a new 2-year contract or buy it outright at $699. I don't think I need to mention how out of their minds they are for overpricing yet another LTE tablet, so I'll instead focus on the positives. This tablet is ultra-thin (thinnest in the world for LTE tabs), has a Super AMOLED Plus display, dual cameras, a 1.4GHz dual-core processor, and may just be the perfect size at 7.7 inches. It will run Honeycomb (Android 3.2) out of the box and there is no mention yet as to Verizon or Samsung's plans to update it to Ice Cream Sandwich. We would hope that it is in the plans though.

Be sure to check out our hands-on with the device from CES.

Google Voice Actions bests Apple Siri in Motorola tests

There has been a lot of discussion on our site about Siri, Iris and even Google's upcoming Majel, but how does Android's current version of voice recognition software stack up against the competition? Motorola seems to think that Google Voice Actions is already better than Apple's Siri and has a few videos to prove it.

The video below goes through a series of voice commends with an iPhone 4S and the Motorola Electrify. Even though Siri might have a bit of an advantage in recognizing conversational language, Google Voice Actions comes out on top when asked to send text messages, find driving directions and load a web page.

Motorola Atrix 2 versus iPhone 4S
Motorola Photon 4G versus iPhone 4S

We're sure the folks over at Apple are not going to be impressed with Motorola's videos, but the reality is that Google Voice Actions works really well and is available on all Android phones running Android 2.1 or higher. The only real issue with the service is that most Android users are not aware that it even exists. It's a little ironic that Google (an advertising company) has such a hard time telling its consumers about Android features which are hidden in plain sight.

Google Voice Actions may be fast at sending out a text message or getting you from point A to point B, but we do enjoy the

Amazon UK reveals HTC One X release date

Earlier today all three HTC One phones were listed on Expansys for pre-order with no details about availability, but Amazon UK now lists the HTC One X as available for pre-order with an estimated release date of April 5. Amazon's price for the HTC One X is £30 more than what Expansys is charging, but we know a lot of people who buy from Amazon may be willing to pay a bit more simply because they trust the brand.

We have searched Amazon UK several times, but have been unable to locate the HTC One S and HTC One V. Based on HTC's statements during yesterday's press event, we should expect all three phones to hit global markets around the same time. In the coming days we should expect Amazon and other retailers to list the HTC One S and HTC One V with early April release dates.

How long do you think it'll take T-Mobile and AT&T to launch the HTC One S and HTC One XL in the US market?
