New Amazon App Store for Android

Today Amazon officially unveiled their Android application store with 3800 apps. Why did Amazon launch their own app store? There are a few reasons that we can think of. Chief among them is that Amazon wants to be a part of the huge app store industry and reap profits. Second, Amazon has a huge asset they can use to promote and sell apps…their website! And finally, Amazon already has your credit card on file, making it super easy for you to buy apps from them. So how is the app store? The interface is quite nice, but we found ourselves missing the “geeky” green color of the Android market. We were appreciate of the free offering for new Angry Birds Rio, but were quickly sobered by the overall lack of selection of apps. While there isn’t a high quantity of apps, most of the basics are covered. If you happen to buy an app from the Amazon app store that you already own from the Amazon app store, you’ll get a notification that will give you a chance to cancel your order, which is a good feature.
